Great video Ash…I just posted up a short but cool blog showing some of the news stories that occurred on the day Obama was elected that demonstrate the human rights abuses built into the state apparatuses.

    Ashley,

What is going on with Ralph Nader? He goes on Fox News of all places on the day Obama makes history and defends a comment asking if Barack will be an Uncle Tom. Unbelievable. I am losing more and more respect for Nader. Even if he disagrees with Obama on some policies, can’t he at least recognize what the other night meant to so many people (especially minorities)?

And I guess my second comment after watching your video is: what is the point of this? You’re smarter than this. Do you really think an Obama Administration will be no different than Bush or McCain?

I would love for you and the Naderites to challenge and critique Obama honestly and sincerely with the intent of making a real difference. Working with us instead of against us. But instead you declare war on the people with whom you share the most in common. You seem to subscribe to a politics that is all or nothing, a self-congatulatory echo chamber where ideological purity trumps everything, including real progress, real people and rhetorical effect.

This post may sound like an attack, but as you know, I have respected you in many ways and don’t doubt your intentions. I just find your politics (and Nader’s) narrow, reductive, and counterproductive.

One more thing: I have heard Nader defend his racist comments by saying that Obama doesn’t speak to the African American community or their needs, that he won’t make their lives better with his rhetoric or policies. Talk about condescending. How many black people were behind Nader this election? 96% were behind Obama, including Cornell West, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, the MLK family, and millions of others. Can they all be dismissed the way Rush Limbaugh dismissed Colin Powell’s endorsement? Apparently, Ralph Nader believes so. As a privileged white man, after all, he knows what’s best for black people and all minorities.

Why is it not equally racist to vote for a black man because of his skin as it is to vote against him because of his skin?
I am willing to bet that those who have so much in common with Nader supporters have very little in common with Mr. Obama’s policies (Increasing the size and budget of the military, Leaving 150,000 residual troops in Iraq, Funding for the Iraq war with no timetable for withdrawal, Escalated war in Afghanistan and use of force against Pakistan and Iran, “Terrorist” rhetoric that obscures US fault in conflicts, Support for the Israel lobby and denigration of Palestinian fighters as terrorists, So-called “free” trade supported by trade deals like NAFTA, Off-shore oil drilling, “clean” coal, Big nuclear power and wasteful corn ethanol, Defiance of the constitution through telecom immunity and the Patriot Act, Refusal to support single payer healthcare, Refusal to perform Constitutional obligation and hold impeachment hearings)

The least worse is still bad, even if he is black.
